What iris is
Iris, or orris when the root is meant, smells powdery, cool and slightly earthy. The material is not the flower but the rhizome, which is dried for years before it is extracted; that is why orris is among the costliest naturals. Its smell is close to violet, with a cool, slightly earthy dryness that gives a perfume a powdery finish.
Its nearest relative among the notes is violet; a powdery effect can also come from musk.
